Book Description
Cape Verde is a destination on the up: construction is rocketing, international flight numbers are soaring, and visitor arrivals are rising year on year. As the country prospers, Cape Verde’s diaspora (of whom 400,000 live in America) is joining the foreign tourists to return for holidays, to retire to the islands, or even to set up new lives there. The fourth edition of this genuinely independent guide features a new section on buying property. It provides updated information on Cape Verde’s rapidly expanding tourist facilities, a  revised natural history section, and helps visitors delve deep into the heart of the country’s spectacular landscape, colorful music and unusual people.

Book Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Republic of Cape Verde i/ ke p v rd/ (Portuguese: Cabo Verde, pronounced: ) is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa. The islands, covering a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi), are of volcanic origin and while three of them (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry, the remaining ones are generally rockier and have more vegetation. However, because of the infrequent occurrence of rainfall the overall landscape is not particularly green, despite what the country's name suggests (verde is Portuguese for "green"). The name of the country stems instead from the nearby Cap Vert, on the Senegalese coast, which in its turn was originally named "Cabo Verde" when it was sighted by Portuguese explorers in 1444, a few years before the islands were discovered.

Book Description
The Cape Verde Islands, an Atlantic archipelago off the coast of Senegal, were first settled during the Portuguese Age of Discovery in the fifteenth century. A Crioulo” population quickly evolved from a small group of Portuguese settlers and large numbers of slaves from the West African coast. In this important new study, Dr. Richard Lobban sketches Cape Verde’s complex history over five centuries, from its role in the slave trade through its years under Portuguese colonial administration and its protracted armed struggle on the Guinea coast for national independence, there and in Cape Verde.Dr. Lobban offers a rich ethnography of the islands, exploring the diverse heritage of Cape Verdeans who have descended from Africans, Europeans, and Luso-Africans. Looking at economics and politics, Lobban reflects on Cape Verde’s efforts to achieve economic growth and development, analyzing the move from colonialism to state socialism and on to a privatized market economy built around tourism, fishing, small-scale mining, and agricultural production. He then chronicles Cape Verde’s peaceful transition from one-party rule to elections and political pluralism. He concludes with an overview of the prospects for this tiny oceanic nation on a pathway to development.
