Lagos State Government in the South-west Nigeria has warned that henceforth any individual found wanting of violating the rules at play on sanitation day would be fine to the tune of N50, 000.

The government also reiterated that the monthly environmental sanitation law forbids movement during the hours of 7am and 10am of every last Saturday’s of a month. This month's exercise holds on Saturday, May 29, 2010.

The state Commissioner for the Environment , Dr. Muiz Banire, who disclosed this yesterday in Lagos, said plans were on to further strengthen the enforcement of the restriction order to ensure that the time is used for the purpose which it was set aside.

According to him, “henceforth, any vehicle that is impounded will pay N50, 000 while individuals will pay N10, 000 as fine.” He recalled that last month 16 vehicles were impounded while 79 people were arrested and arraigned before the court of law.

Banire observed that most of the people caught in recent past use the need to resume duty early in the morning as excuse.

This, he said, was lame and untenable. He advised such categories of people to leave their abodes early enough and get to their workplace before 7am.

Military and Police personnel who are on official duty during the sanitation exercise must be armed with duly signed exit or relevant document indicating that he was duty bound to be on the road at that hour.

The letter must be signed by the Commanding Officers or Commissioner of Police as the case may apply.

“Jogging, playing football and other sporting activities are also prohibited. Such offenders, according to him, risk arrest and prosecution. “Parents are warned to caution their children and wards and impress it on them to spend time cleaning the homes and immediate surroundings instead of messing around,” he said.

The commissioner also stated that the monitoring and enforcement team which include law enforcement agents have been decentralized so that the State is widely covered during the exercise to ensure total compliance with the laws of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
