The current state of infrastructural decay and incessant power outages at the airports in the in Nigeria has been condemned by the Airline Operators of Nigerian (AON).

The AON also noted that besides huge economic losses, the national embarrassments these obsolete facilities have caused are also a threat to safety of both the passengers and airliners.

There was power outage that struck the nation’s busiest airport, the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos last week which caused many people wondering whether the government is really serious about improving aviation in the country.

“Last week this country was embarrassed with the loss of electricity at Nigeria’s premier airport, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport for three hours. Air travel was completely halted for this period of time,” the AON said in a statement.

“This scandal is simply unacceptable. It is obvious to all discerning Nigerians that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport has failed. It is over crowded and poorly managed,” it added.

The Senate had on Thursday last week ordered its Committee on Aviation to investigate the power outages that had adversely affected activities at the airport on Sunday and Monday last week.

The operators therefore called on government to take immediate actions towards modernizing these airports through the implementation of programmes that would provide better facilities for travelers and users of airports in the country.

However, an AON staff who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorize to speak to the press stated that for FAAN to function efficiently all debts owed the authority by airlines, users of the agency’s facilities, including airlines must be reconciled.

He lamented the huge debts owed the agency by airlines and concessionaires, adding that without payment, FAAN or any other agency would not be able to deliver service.
