Tehran, May 17, IRNA -- Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe on Saturday left for Iran to attend the 14th G15 summit in Tehran.

Mugabe was accompanied by First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs in the President's Office Didymus Mutasa and other senior Government officials.

Mugabe will join several other leaders from Africa, Asia and South America at the summit, which is expected to explore new areas of economic co-operation amongst member countries.

Syrian President Bashar-al-Assad and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be special guests to the conference.

The G15 is a group of 18 developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and was set up to foster co-operation amongst members and other international groups.

It comprises Iran, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

Prior to the heads of state meeting, the G15 foreign ministers met in Teheran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said economic co-operation between G15 members, exploring new avenues for co-operation between the countries in the three continents, and a review of international developments would be on the agenda of the high-profile summit.

The first G15 Summit was held in September 1989 in the then Yugoslavia (now Serbia) with 15 member countries who had a common goal of economic growth and prosperity.

The group has since expanded to 18 nations but the name was never changed to reflect the increase in membership.

Iran took over the chair of the G15 during the 13th summit held in the Cuban capital, Havana, in September 2006.
