The former Governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, has warned President Goodluck Jonathan, not to aspire to contest the presidential election in 2011.

Kaita who spoke in Katsina after commiserating with the family of the late president Yar’Adua yesterday, said Jonathan should maintain the status quo and respect the zoning formula of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said, "Although Jonathan is yet to make any pronouncement about the perceived ambition, as such we should believe that it is one of those rumours making the rounds."

The outspoken politician noted that a Muslim Vice President should picked so that the north could, after this tenure, produce the next president that would complete the second tenure for the north.

According to him, Jonathan should not short change the north by wanting to contest the presidency in 2011 but should honourably respect the gentlemanly agreement by allowing the north to finish its term.

He said if eventually Jonathan has an eye on the presidency, then they will not hesitate to bring him down, "by beating him hands down".

The former Action Congress (AC) chieftain said Nigerians are honourable people and whoever tries to play with their intelligence will at the end will himself to blame.

"Nigerians are honourable people and nobody should try to toy with the destiny of this country; and if it so happens such a person will be confronted because Nigeria is bigger than an individual, so he (Jonathan) should abide by the PDP zoning formula."

Kaita who has just returned to his former party, PDP, said the party’s decision to adopt the zoning system was not a mistake but out of the conviction that it was the only thing that could sustain peace in the country.
