In a letter, dated April 7 and circulated to the foreign ministers of member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Amano asked the foreign ministers to inform him of any views that their governments might have on the issue.
“I have the honor to refer to the resolution entitled “Israeli nuclear capabilities” that was adopted by the 53rd regular session of the General Conference on September 18, 2009,” Amano’s letter noted.
The resolution, inter alia, expressed “concern about the Israeli nuclear capabilities”, called upon Israel “to accede to the NPT and place all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards”, urged “the director General to work with the concerned states towards achieving that end” and “report on the implementation of this resolution to the Board of Governors and the General Conference at its 54th regular session”, the UN nuclear watchdog chief said in his letter.
“I expect that the replies that I would receive to these letters will help me to report on the matter to the Board of Governors and to the General Conference at its fifty-fourth regular session,” the letter concluded.
At the IAEA’s last general conference in September 2009, member states passed a resolution entitled “Israeli nuclear capabilities” which called on the Zionist regime “to accede to the NPT and place all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards.
