Foni communities trained on HIV/AIDS

Gambia Tuesday, May 04, 2010 Saint Joseph's Family Farms in Bwiam in collaboration with Concern Universal The Gambia recently conducted HIV/AIDS and gender training programmes for communities in the Fonis, Western Region. According to the training co-coordinator, Tijang Manga, the programme was aimed at creating awareness among refugees and hosts in the Fonis. He said with the influx of refuges to the region, it is important to sensitise them about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. He added that Refugees are vulnerable people when it comes to HIV/AIDS, thus creating awareness among them is vital. Manga also stressed that awareness creation on sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and gender is crucial in empowering refugees, and went on to disclose that a United Nations AIDS report in 2007 has shown that about 22 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV/AIDS.
