The hippopotamuses on Tuesday, April 22 destroyed over 40 nursery beds at Moriba rice filed in Janjanburay, CRR. The nursery beds, which were due for transplanting, were seriously damaged by the hippos causing another setback for farmers in the area.

A delegation comprising Agricultural officials from Sapu Agricultural office together with the National Assembly member of Janjanburay, Hon. Foday Jibani Manka; Alhaji Omar Mambureh and journalists, visited the scene. Speaking to the Daily Observer's CRR correspondent shortly after the visit, the National Assembly member of the area, Hon. Foday Jibani Manka, explained that the rice farm was established in 2002 to respond to the clarion call made by President Jammeh for people to go back to the land. He said such damage caused by the hippos had never happened before, even though the hippos do cause damages.

Hon. Manka appealed to the Department of Parks and Wildlife to intervene in order to curb the menace. The principal agricultural officer at Sapu, Mustapha Drammeh, noted that the hippos have caused extensive damage on the seedlings, thereby causing delay in the progress of the season.

Speaking on behalf of the victims within the locality, Muhammed Fatty, who is also the head of the Moriba rice field, also confirmed that the hippos have seriously affected them and that their season has failed. He observed that the hippos normally come out when the river is in high tide.
