UNICEF, SUBEB to sponsor 400 girls in Sokoto

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) have jointly come into agreement by committing N210 million for the enrolment of girls into schools.
The two organizations said the gesture is part of efforts to ensure that poverty does not hinder indigent girls from acquiring higher education. They are to sponsor 400 of such girls for NCE training.
SUBEB Chairman Alhaji Umaru Nagwari who disclosed this in Sokoto, a state in north-west Nigeria said the move was aimed at further boosting girl-child education in the state. He added that it was also geared towards encouraging the parents to allow their children acquire higher education.
Nagwari said the 400 indigent girls would be used as role models in their respective local government areas during and after their NCE courses. He disclosed that the beneficiaries would also be given automatic employment on the successful completion of their studies.
Giving a breakdown of the sponsorship, the SUBEB chairman explained that last year, 100 indigent girls were admitted into the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto. Also, according to him, this year 300 girls were also admitted into the same college.
Alhaji Nagwari disclosed that in 2009 , about N 19 million was expended on girls for the payment of their registration fees , tuition fees and other logistics while over N 55 million was spent on them this year.
The remaining N144 million will be spent on the female students up till to completion of their three years’ courses, he added. The sponsorship is for the period of 2009 – 2012.
