Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretary Usman Leman told AFP that journalists were taking part in the search.

"We have volunteers from our colleagues who are taking part in the search by the police. Every forest and bush is being combed," he said.

Leman said the kidnappers were insisting on a ransom of 30 million naira (200,000 dollars, 155,000 euros) before the journalists could be freed.

The gunmen had earlier demanded 250 million naira.
