Unidentified gunmen have attacked an army vehicle carrying Libyan soldiers near the coastal city of Sirte, killing two of them and injuring another.

The attack took place in an area situated some 40 kilometers east of the city on Monday.

Reports say that the soldiers fell victim to the attack when they were on their way back from a mission in the capital Tripoli to the eastern city of Benghazi.

The injured soldier was initially sent to a Sirte hospital for medical treatment and then transferred to another hospital in Benghazi --Libya's second largest city.

Over the past months, eastern Libya has been hit by bombings and assassinations targeting judges, doctors as well as military and police officers.

On August 23, unidentified gunmen shot and killed Libyan army colonel, Mustafa al-Aguili, in a drive-by shooting in Benghazi.

On August 9, unknown assailants shot dead a Libyan doctor, who hosted a television program on human development, in Benghazi.

Azzedine Koussos, a presenter for Libya al-Hurra television, came under attack when he was sitting in his parked car near a blood bank in the Sidi Hussein district of the city.

In February 2011, Libyans rose up against former dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s four-decade rule and deposed him in August 2011. He was slain in his hometown of Sirte on October 20 of the same year.
