Third int'l meeting on Darfur peace supports Qatar talks

NYALA, Sudan, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The third international conference on peace in Darfur on Friday reiterated its support for the Qatari-hosted Darfur peace talks, and reaffirmed its call for the Darfur militants to join the ongoing efforts to settle the conflict in the region.
United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) chief Ibrahim Gambari, as well as envoys to Sudan from China, Russia, Canada, Finland, Japan, the Arab League (AL), the African Union ( AU), the UN and the European Union (EU) attended the meeting which convened in Nyala, capital of South Darfur State.
"We discussed issues relating to security, the political process and the humanitarian conditions," Gambari told reporters after the meeting.
"The participants commended the developments in Doha. They welcomed the opportunity to commence the Darfur peace political process and drew attention to the need for a lively environment which will make it credible," he added.
He also urged the Darfur armed movements to join the peace talks to achieve an agreement that would win consensus of all parties.
The conference discussed issues on the Darfur peace process, means of boosting the process and continuation of coordination between UNAMID and the Sudanese government to ensure delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in urgent need.
The participants exchanged ideas on the initiatives aiming at enhancing sustainable peace in the region and reviewed what has been done during the past period.
The first meeting of the international envoys to Sudan on Darfur was convened in Rwandan capital of Kigali in February 2010 and the second in El-Fasher, Sudan, in July of the same year.
The meeting was convened at a time when the violence which broke out in the region during November and December 2010 due to clashes between the Sudanese government forces and Darfur rebel groups has greatly decreased.
