The major opposition party in West African nation Ghana retained veteran politician Nana Akufo-Addo as presidential candidate for the 2012 general polls.
Akufo-Addo, who lost to incumbent John Atta Mills in the 2008 polls, obtained 83, 517 out of 106, 590 valid votes cast, representing 78.35 percent at their congress over the weekend. His closest rival John Alan Kyerematen polled 21, 226 representing 19.91 percent.
The former attorney-general of Ghana said: "I promise I will not let you down this time - we are coming back in 2012 to redeem Ghana."
“We need each and everyone on board and I pledge to work with all my heart and soul to achieve this. The majority of the people have had their say but the whole family must lead the way to the victory we seek in 2012.”
The New Patriotic Party lost to the ruling National Democratic Congress in a run-off election barely two years ago.
