Ghana's spectacular victory against Serbia sent a passion of excitement across Africa as millions watched them win their opening match and Africa's first victory at the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana’s Black Stars are among six African countries representing the continent at the ongoing global football showpiece hosted on the African turf for the first time.
The 2010 showpiece has inspired and unified Africans of different backgrounds to pelt their support behind ‘the African six-pack’ comprising host South Africa, Algeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
Minutes after Ghana beat Serbia thanks to a penalty, social media networks, broadcast stations and blogs of Africans on the continent and the Diaspora were choking blocked with updates of excitement, encouragement, support and fun.
Several tweets and Facebook updates carried messages of jubilation, inspiration and excitement.
Thierry Bafour, a Senegalese student in France posted on Twitter “Ghana is a time bomb waiting to happen for Africa. Go Go Go Africa”.
Clyde Shifwati, a radio personality said on his Facebook update “Ghana has done it for Africa”.
Namibian journalist Chengetai Kusemoh said in a text message from Windhoek minutes after Sunday’s match, “I am sure Ghana will do us honors. They put up a good fight”.
Daniel Tonga, a Zambian MA student at Tsinghua University in China posted the following on his blog, “The win by Ghana against Serbia should be celebrated as if it is the grand finale of the World Cup. There is no doubt Ghana deserved to win. They far outplayed their opponents.”
Radio stations carried live phone-in shows, allowing callers to express their views and opinions on the Ghana-Serbia encounter.
Africa is looking forward to a possible party today and Tuesday as the Elephants of Ivory Coast and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions go for their opening games.
