Somalia’s newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has named Abdi Farah Shirdon Saaid as the country’s new prime minister, Press TV reports.
The naming of the 54-year-old prominent businessman as premier is the first major decision by an administration in Somalia in more than 20 years.

The move comes days after al-Shabab militants withdrew from their last major stronghold in Kismayo, before Somali and Kenyan troops took control of the strategic city.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, also a political newcomer, was sworn in as president last month.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The African nation is one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced people in the world.
