505 10 Gambia’s Ex-Drug Chief & co Deny Charges

The former National Drug Enforcement Agency boss, Mr. Ibrahim Bun Sanneh and four other drug enforcement officials were yesterday arraigned before Justice Emmanuel Ahmadi of the Banjul High Court after spending almost 2 months in detention.

Other accused persons including his deputy, Karamo Bojang, Ousman Sanneh, Marie Sanneh and Alieu Samba, are facing 12 counts ranging from theft and theft related, to unlawful possession of firearms. All accused persons denied the charges.

On count one, the accused person are alleged to have conspired among themselves, between 2005 to 2010, to steal various sums of money and prohibited drugs belonging to the Gambia Government. Count Two affects, only the boss and it states that he has stolen the sum of D150, 000, which he dishonestly paid to his step daughter, Marie Sanneh.

Count three states that Marie Sanneh aided Ibrahim Bun Sanneh to steal the sum of D150, 000, of public property, while count four alleges that Ibrahim Bun Sanneh sometime in December while in office stole D350, 000, property of the Gambia Government.

Count five alleges that Alieu Samba aided in December 2009 his boss to steal D350, 000 and count six states that Bun’s deputy, Karamo Bojang also while in office stole D250, 000. Count Seven Statement of Offence: Theft by public officer contrary to Section 245 (1) and punishable under Section 257 of the Criminal Code Cap 10 Laws of the Gambia 1990.

Particulars of Offence: Ibrahim Bun Sanneh, Ousman Sanneh, and Karamo Bojang, sometime in the year 2007, in The Gambia, being public officers in the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA) jointly stole 500 grams of Cocaine property of the Government of The Gambia which came into their possession as public officers and gave it to one Manjang Janko to sell and give them the proceeds, without the consent of the Government of The Gambia, and thereby committed an offence.

Ibrahim Bun Sanneh, Ousman Sanneh and Karamo Bojang, according to count eight, have in 2007, jointly stole 500 grams of cocaine, being The Gambia’s property. Count Eight, which is theft, alleges that Ousman Sanneh stole an unspecified amount of prohibited drugs from the Drug Enforcement office in Banjul. Count nine also states that the same Ousman Sanneh in February 2009 stole the sum of D26, 000 of public money.

Going further count ten alleges that Karamo Bojang between the 1st January and 23rd April 2010, at Sanyang Village was in possession of one single barrel shot gun without a valid license. Count eleven states that the same Karamo Bojang was during the same time in possession of fourteen rounds of live ammunition without a valid license.

And the final count states that Ibrahim Bun Sanneh while in office, received a report from the Exhibit keeper, NDEA, Alieu Jassey that at the conclusion of NDEA cases at the Magistrate’s Court Banjul presided over by Edrissa Mbye, it was found that the exhibits given to the Magistrate’s Court by the NDEA were tampered with before being returned to the NDEA for destruction, but suppressed this information, and destroyed the tampered exhibits with the knowledge that the tampered exhibits may be required in evidence in a prosecution of the members of staff of the Magistrate’s Court involved.
